Silver Peak Summit

Oh, shit.

Neal’s parting shot repeated on a loop in Rock’s brain. The only thing I’m thinking about is you, me, and the wild.

The way those words made Rock feel scared the crap out of him. This thing with Neal had gone from hating each other to fucking each other to saying shit like that in the blink of an eye. But Rock couldn’t deny the pull he felt. He felt like Neal just got him—got the reasons why he hid his true self, didn’t judge him for it even though it wasn’t the way he did things, and definitely got what Rock needed sexually.

It had been so long since he’d been with someone he didn’t have to hide from. Neal took the good, the bad, and the ugly and dealt with it however he saw fit…a lot of times with a good hard fuck, but that was okay if it was what they’d both needed. But because they’d clicked so well, Rock was starting to feel…things. Things a man buried so far in the closet that he found all the missing left socks had no right to feel. And based on those words, Neal might have some feelings on the line as well.

Neal was a beautiful man, not just physically—but, damn—but in spirit as well. He was so vibrant, living his life just the way he wanted. Even though he’d been unimaginably hurt, he still surged forward, taking on the world. Shame and jealousy curled in Rock’s gut, along with a healthy dose of admiration. Goddammit, there he went again with the feelings!

As much as it pained him, Rock had to get them back to where they were before—grudging tolerance, with a possible side helping of occasional hate-fucking. He wasn’t in a place in his life where he could live openly gay, and he couldn’t force Neal into his closet if they were to pursue a relationship. Even if Neal agreed to it, Rock would be devastated to see that light and vibrance fade away as Neal hid his true self right along with him.

Besides, Neal had already been dicked over—and not in a good way—recently. He certainly didn’t deserve having his emotions toyed with when he was still so raw. No, Rock had to firmly close his closet door and make sure Neal was on the other side of it. He looked over at Neal, dozing lightly on his back on the flat boulder, and felt a pang in his chest so acute that he reached up and rubbed his sternum. Mourning whatever could’ve been, Rock figured.

Thunder rolled and echoed through the basin. It was their only warning before the clouds opened up and began pissing down on them again. The eye of the storm had passed.

“Fuck!” Neal yelped as he was awakened by a mouthful of rainwater.

They both scrambled into their rain gear as fast as they could to keep their clothes dry. “Shouldn’t have lounged around so long,” Rock growled.

Neal gave him a quizzical look before shaking his head and shrugging into his pack.
